84,000 Antidotes to 84,000 Obscurations: Promises and Challenges in Translating a Tibetan Buddhist Canon

    College of Liberal Arts

This talk will introduce the project 84000: Translating the Words of the Buddha. 84000 is a global initiative that aims to translate into English and other modern languages all the Buddhist scriptures translated and preserved in the Tibetan language from Sanskrit, Chinese, Khotanese and other language source texts, and to make them freely available online. The presentation will discuss the origins, mission, working procedures, and progress of this project. It will also touch upon some of the unique challenges this project faces, such as how to utilize the complex multi-lingual source texts of the Tibetan translations; how to balance fidelity to source and target languages when rendering them into English; and if and how to address through translation issues of contemporary concern, such as gender, sex, race, and class inequality, among others, which we find in ancient Buddhist scriptural sources.
