Just in time for Arbor Day, the Ambler Arboretum welcomes Aaron Greenberg of the Pennsylvania Champion Tree Program to explain the process of finding and documenting the state’s largest trees. Register online.
Pennsylvania, or “Penn’s Woods,” is a commonwealth defined by iconic trees and forests. Large, old trees are all around us if we know where to look, in parks, gardens and forests. Although much of the old-growth forest is gone, Pennsylvania is still home to many huge and impressive trees. We’ll discuss the ecological, economic and cultural benefits of big trees and highlight some of Pennsylvania’s most interesting and impressive specimens. We’ll also look at how champion trees are found, how they’re measured, and how a true champion is crowned.
Aaron Greenberg is the state coordinator for the Pennsylvania Champion Tree Program, a register of the largest trees of each species in the Commonwealth. He’s an ISA Board Certified Master Arborist and the arboretum manager for Laurel Hill and West Laurel Hill Cemeteries. He lives in West Philadelphia and is passionate about big trees, old-growth forests and the connections between people and the trees that surround them.
