What were the Founding Fathers really thinking when they wrote the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution? While today’s debate on gun violence centers on individual rights, Noah Shusterman thinks that the key to understanding the original intent of the Second Amendment is found in a debate between standing armies and voluntary militias that dates back to Roman times.
Historian Noah Shusterman earned his PhD in 2004 at the University of California at Berkeley. Following his doctorate studies, he taught at Temple University before arriving at the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2014. He’s the author of Armed Citizens: The Road from Ancient Rome to the Second Amendment.
