Beyond the Notes: Vienna 1913

    Temple University Libraries

Travel back in time with the students of Boyer’s “Vienna 1913” musicology course and Boyer faculty member Dr. Micaela Baranello. On the brink of World War I, the city was both the capital of an old-fashioned empire and the home of some of Europe’s most experimental artists. This year, Vienna witnessed a premiere that resulted in a fistfight and lawsuits, as well as the continued growth of the brand-new movie business, and much more. Student musicians will introduce and perform a selection of the extraordinary variety of music that defined this era, including chamber music, solo piano music, art song, and opera and operetta excerpts by composers such as Alban Berg, Emmerich Kálmán, Arnold Schoenberg, Alma Mahler, Karol Szymanowski, Erich Wolfgang Korngold, and Egon Kornauth, all seen through the lens of 1913.

Light refreshments served. Boyer recital credit given.
