    Mark Hauber

The Department of Biology is excited to invite you to a seminar entitled "Species recognition in brood parasitic birds and their hosts: from neuroendocrine mechanisms to coevolutionary arms-races" by Dr. Mark Hauber,  Professor of Psychology at the City University of New York on Monday, November 10 at 3pm in BL234. We kindly ask you to make every effort to attend.

    Host: Dr. Ananias Escalante

Abstract: Obligate brood parasitic birds represent 1% of all avian species but impact nearly 20% of parental bird taxa. Here I address both how juvenile parasites recognize their own species and how hosts reject or tolerate heterospecific parasitic propagules in their nests. Our methods range from functional neurogenomics through endocrine manipulations to behavioral experiments and comparative methods. The results suggest a multimodal suite of behavioral cues and coevolutionary outcomes for each of these recognition mechanisms.
