"Self" is a fundamental concept in social science, yet there has not been much agreement on what self is, how it is formed, and why it matters. In Advanced Introduction to the Sociology of the Self, Shanyang Zhao provides a theoretical framework for understanding the concept, social origins, and societal functions of the self. Distinguishing self from self-concept and social determinants from neurocognitive prerequisites, Zhao reviews how social schemas shape self-concept through three intertwined mechanisms and how social resources affect self-conscious action through social position and social capital. Zhao also examines the role self plays in the institutional construction of human society, arguing that there can be no human society without reflective self.
