Her book Sunset and Suffering: World War I in the Art and Life of Horace Pippin, published by Temple University Press, is the first intellectual history and cultural biography on the remarkable self-taught artist. Bernier explores Horace Pippin’s influence as a groundbreaking African American painter whose experience as a soldier in World War I influenced his life and work. Bernier is a professor of African American Studies at the University of Nottingham, UK, and her other works include Characters of Blood: Black Heroism in the Transatlantic Imagination and African American Visual Arts: From Slavery to the Present.
