In a March 21 lecture based on his 2020 book With Masses and Arms: Peru's Tupac Amaru Revolutionary Movement and prior scholarship on Andean insurgencies, Dr. Miguel La Serna explores the gripping history of the Tupac Amaru Revolutionary Movement (MRTA) and its Peruvian Maoist counterpart, the Shining Path, providing vital insight into both the history of modern Peru and the link between political violence and the culture of communications in Latin America. La Serna argues that the history of the MRTA is the story of the euphoric draw of armed action and the devastating consequences that result when a political movement succumbs to the whims of its most militant followers.
