Join the Tyler School of Art and Architecture for a virtual lecture from ceramicist Gerald A. Brown, multi-disciplinary artist and co-founder of the Clay Siblings’ Project. Brown currently curates shows and programs at the Vox Populi collective and teaches with The Clay Studio outreach program.
Her complex and immersive installations incorporate found objects, sound and signage to examine American constructs of Black Exceptionalism, womanhood and respectability. Presently, her work deals with the concept of “The Descendants of Strange Fruit,” pulling from the racial tensions of today compared to those highlighted by the Billie Holiday classic song. By analyzing Black exceptionalism, womanhood, respectability, and her own life experiences, Brown commemorates the lives of those living through the generational trauma of what she calls the “Strange Fruit disease.”
The Critical Dialogue Series is hosted by Tyler School of Art and Architecture at Temple University and is partially supported through Temple University's General Activity Fund.
