The Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics Seminar Series presents: Dr. Amy Ferketich: “The Break Free Smoking Cessation Program: Challenges and Rewards”
HYBRID SEMINAR: In Person in room 992, Ritter Annex or online via Zoom: https://temple.zoom.us/j/99145990923
This seminar will look at how the cervical cancer burden is high among women in Appalachian region of the United States, but smoking continues to be a prevalent behavior among adults residing in this region. Dr. Ferketich will discuss Break Free and its goal to deliver a smoking cessation program to women living in Appalachia by embedding it within a larger, integrated cervical cancer prevention program that includes cervical cancer screening and HPV vaccination. Break Free was a primary care clinic-based implementation program that promoted smoking cessation through: 1) implementation of a tobacco user identification system, 2) provider training on the Ask, Advise and Refer (AAR) model, 3) implementation of AAR for women who want to quit smoking within the next six months, and 4) referral to cessation phone counseling and nicotine replacement therapy. The study included 35 Appalachian health clinics across 10 healthcare systems. In this seminar, results and challenges from the Break Free study will be presented. Dr. Amy Ferketich is the Associate Dean of Academic and Student Affairs and Professor of Epidemiology at the Ohio State University College of Public Health.
