Join Nathan Hommel, ASLA, Director of Planning and Design for University City District in Philadelphia, as he presents “Tactical Urbanism: Short Term Action, Long Term Change.” According to Hommel: “We are surrounded by public spaces that are poorly designed. Often times we don’t even notice them.
In order to increase urban quality of life, we need to make these places for people. Unfortunately, costs and red tape can bog down this process. To improve public spaces, communities and designers should consider that ‘Perfect is the enemy of done.’ It is best to experiment with placemaking (a people-centered approach to design) to see what works, track usage and determine how to make the design better rather than waiting to perfect it. This approach is called ‘Tactical Urbanism.’
This lecture is presented by the Department of Landscape Architecture and Horticulture and the School of Environmental Design.
