Speaker: Clifford Ando, University of Chicago

The Roman Empire stretched from Scotland to Iraq, and Turkey to Morocco. How was this vast and diverse array of peoples, languages and cultures brought together? Rome was a laboratory for two very different strategies of government, one based on the cultivation of difference and the other on erasing it. The talk will explore this history and compare Rome to modern federal and national states.
