Title: Navigating Generative AI Pitfalls: Mitigating Metacognitive, Social, and Ethical Risks with Antagonistic AI
Abstract: Generative AI has introduced a wealth of opportunities for educators and learners, yet it also brings significant risks. Our recent research highlights a range of harms, including detrimental effects on students' metacognition, disruptions in social interactions, and the unavoidable entanglement with plagiarism in AI-driven environments. In this talk, I will detail our findings on these issues within computing classrooms and introduce Antagonistic AI—an innovative approach that deliberately integrates friction into the design and development process to foster critical reflection and address the negative consequences of AI tools. By exploring these issues and solutions, this talk aims to provide insights into how educators can harness AI’s benefits while mitigating its risks.
