2017 French, German, Italian and Slavic Film Festival: Sex and Power in International Cinema
The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (German: Das Cabinet des Dr. Caligari, directed by Robert Wiene) is a 1920 German silent horror film. Considered the quintessential work of German Expressionist cinema and a representative film of Weimar Cinema, it tells the story of an insane hypnotist who uses a somnambulist to commit murders. The film features a dark and contorted visual style, with sharp-pointed forms, oblique and curving lines, and shadows and streaks of light painted directly onto the sets, combining elements of expressionist theater, urban carnival and cinematic innovations into a classic of German cinema.
