Hispanic Heritage Month: Do We Need a Unified Latinidad? Resisting the Pull of Essentialism in Philosophy and Politics

Please join us for a Philosophy talk with Annette Martín (UIC/Princeton), that touches on issues related to Latinx identity.

What makes someone Latinx? What does it mean to be a woman? Traditional philosophical approaches have largely assumed that there needs to be a single, unified answer to these kinds of questions. This idea has also been politically important: for example, some people think that we need the idea of a shared Latinidad that can unify us in political struggle. However, this talk will suggest that we do not need universal answers to these questions, and that striving to find them can do more harm than good.
