ILLUMINATIONS Black Cinematic Artists & Scholars Speaker Series: Ja'Tovia Gary
In conversation with Dr. Ashley Young
Description
OCT. 20 @ 6 p.m.
This free event on zoom will feature a presentation by Ja’Tovia Gary, a filmmaker and
multidisciplinary artist working across documentary, avant-garde video art, sculpture and installation. She seeks to trouble notions of
objectivity and neutrality in nonfiction storytelling by asserting a Black feminist subjectivity, and
applies what scholar and cultural critic bell hooks terms “an oppositional gaze” as both maker and critical spectator of moving image works.
Gary is visiting at the invitation of the Racial Justice Task Force. The ILLUMINATIONS series is supported by The Center for the Performing and Cinematic Arts, and produced by The Department of Film & Media Arts.
