Juneteenth / Black Music Month Virtual Celebration
“Emancipation and Jazz”
The Charles L. Blockson Afro-American Collection
Celebrates Jazz through the music of Robert “Bootsie” Barnes
“Put it this way: Jazz is a good barometer of freedom… In its beginnings, the United States of America spawned certain ideals of freedom and independence through which, eventually, jazz was evolved, and the music is so free that many people say it is the only unhampered, unhindered expression of complete freedom yet produced in this country.“ —Duke Ellington
Join us for a virtual celebration of Black Music Month featuring the late Philadelphia jazz legend Robert “Bootsie” Barnes. We’ll show photographs throughout the years to the tune of his recording “Cosby’s Capers,” aka “Boppin’ Round the Center.” Bootsie’s wife Sandra Turner Barnes will read the poem “The Bop in Blue,” while Bootsie’s grandson Reginald Lewis and band will perform “Three Miles Out.” We will also remember Bootsie Barnes through sharing a video of his performance at the Blockson Collection in 2014.
The program will be held online via Zoom. You do not need a Zoom account to watch the Zoom webinar. Use this link to join: https://temple.zoom.us/j/93642408382
