Jason W. Smith is assistant professor of history at Southern Connecticut State University. He is the author of numerous articles published in the Journal of Military History, Environmental History, the International Journal of Maritime History, and the New England Quarterly. He is the author of To Master the Boundless Sea: The U.S. Navy, the Marine Environment, and the Cartography of Empire (UNC Press, 2018). His new project will be a social and cultural history of American navalism at the turn of the twentieth century.
