Matthew Shannon is an Assistant Professor of History at Emory & Henry College where he is a historian of U.S. foreign relations. His book, which began as a dissertation at Temple, is titled Losing Hearts and Minds: American-Iranian Relations and International Education during the Cold War, and it was published with Cornell University Press in 2017. He remains focused in his current work on the transnational and cultural ties between the United States in Iran, particularly the mid-century missionary presence and its impact on the broader American “mission” in Iran at the height of the developmentalist moment from the 1940s to the 1960s.
