Media outlets around the U.S. are grappling with how to confront the legacy of structural racism within their newsrooms. At the Philadelphia Inquirer, frustrations came to a head following an infamous spring 2020 headline that read "Buildings Matter, Too." Responding to public and staff demands, the Inquirer undertook a major diversity and inclusion initiative. This included commissioning an audit to reflect on past coverage and to explore the context in which this coverage took place.
Join the team of Temple faculty and staff that undertook this audit project alongside representatives of the Inquirer and the Lenfest Local Lab. We'll share key findings, and discuss recommendations for shifting editorial and engagement practices, and challenging assumptions that privilege white audiences. Learn more about the Inquirer audit before the event from a piece Dr. Andrea Wenzel wrote in Poynter about the audit as well as an article from the Philadelphia Inquirer themselves.
RSVP is required to attend the event. This meeting will be recorded.
