For the past 13 years, 39-year-old singer and pop star Britney Spears has been living under a court-appointed conservatorship. A conservatorship (sometimes called a guardianship) is a legal arrangement where one person has agency over another’s personal, financial, and legal decisions. Spears’ own family instituted this conservatorship, citing her mental health issues as the reason. Spears’ father and a team of staff recently served as her conservators. Spears alleges that this team has abused her finances, medicated her, isolated her from others, and more. This case is ever evolving as Spears fights to get the conservatorship overturned.
