Music Studies Colloquium: Andrew Shaw & Issa Aji

Center for the Performing and Cinematic Arts

Passion and Worship: Possessive Eroticism in Dante Gabriel Rossetti and Ralph Vaughan Williams's The House of Life

    Andrew Shaw, speaker

Andrew Shaw is a second-year M.M. student in music history. His research interests include the development of art song traditions, text-music relations, music of the British Isles, and the late-nineteenth/early-twentieth centuries into the modern period.

A Non-Conventional Act of Heroism: the (mis)Placement of the Second Theme in the First Movement of Sibelius’s Second Symphony

    Issa Aji, speaker

Borrowing analytical tools from Hepokoski and Darcy’s Sonata Theory, the paper finds that the exposition’s S1.1 theme does not return in a conventional manner. The once vulnerable S1.1 reemerges in the retransition of the development as the aftermath of the movement’s climax but fails to return in the more conventional recapitulation.
