Borrowing analytical tools from Hepokoski and Darcy’s Sonata Theory, the paper finds that the exposition’s S1.1 theme does not return in a conventional manner. The once vulnerable S1.1 reemerges in the retransition of the development as the aftermath of the movement’s climax but fails to return in the more conventional recapitulation.
