The Music Studies department is pleased to welcome Dr. Marianna Ritchey, whose talk is titled "We Share A Passion for Drama: The Abstraction of Value in Contemporary Art and Business Discourse"
Marianna Ritchey is Associate Professor of Music History at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. She has written about Berlioz, comedy, music history pedagogy, and absolute music. Ritchey’s book, Composing Capital: Classical Music in the Neoliberal Era (U. Chicago Press, 2019), examines classical music and capitalist ideologies in the contemporary United States. She is currently working on an array of topics having to do with music and political imagining, ideas that have evolved within and alongside her work on abolitionist and mutual aid projects in her community of Greenfield, MA.
