Transitions: Continuing the Legacy of Sonny Driver and ScoopUSA Newspaper

    Temple University Libraries

Join the Blockson Collection in a conversation with Sherri Horsey Darden reflecting on her journey with ScoopUSA.

Succession is a fatal flaw for many small businesses. The owners often don’t have anyone to carry the torch and keep the family business going. In Sherri Horsey Darden's case, and the case of Scoop, she was fortunate to come into Sonny Driver’s life. In 1996, Sherri walked into his office as a clerk typist, and over the course of 22 years became more like a daughter than an employee. When he became ill, she agreed to carry his torch and to continue his life’s work of being a voice for our communities.

Sherri has since transitioned Scoop into a media company. Today, Scoop has three publications, a radio show, and a non-profit, ScoopUSA Media Community Education Program. It has been four years since Sherri became the owner and publisher of Scoop. And each year, she has gained insights into herself and who she needs to be to represent the 40,000 people who read Scoop each time the newspaper is published.

This program is presented in partnership with the Charles L. Blockson Collection of African-Americana and the African Diaspora at Penn State Special Collections Library.

This program will be presented via Zoom. On the day of the program, use this link to join: https://temple.zoom.us/j/94692490854
