PPL Colloquium Series - Melissa Noel

    College of Liberal Arts

PPL Faculty Fellow Dr. Melissa Noel, Assistant Professor of Criminal Justice, presents in the PPL Colloquium Series:

Beyond Childhood: Burdens of Parental Incarceration for Black and Latina Women

Parental incarceration is not a discrete event and can extend beyond childhood. An examination on the long-term effects of parental incarceration through the lens of race, ethnicity, and gender remains understudied. Drawing on semi-structured interviews, Dr. Noel explicates how Black and Latina young women compartmentalize the experience of parental incarceration. Further, she provides additional insight to existing theoretical perceptions of critical race feminism and policy implications that will enable young women to rise above adverse circumstances.
