Film Scholars Series: Dr. Hakim Abderrezak, Scholar of Mediterranean and Migration Studies, University of Minnesota, in conversation with Dr. Nora Alter (Professor, Film and Media Arts).
“Sea and Sand: Burning Migrants and Refugees across The Mediterranean and the Sahara.”
The growing number of deaths of migrants and refugees who attempt to cross over to Europe have led contemporary filmmakers to offer alternative narratives to the mainstream political treatment and media coverage of a global phenomenon. In his talk, Abderrezak will argue that just like the Sahara Desert, the Mediterranean Sea is a site of burning, be it physical, conceptual, ideological, etc. He will discuss films produced in various countries, which propose original ways to rethink the current “migration crisis.” Following the lecture, Dr. Abderrezak will be in conversation with Dr. Nora Alter (Professor, Film and Media Arts).
This event is open to the public and part of AIR.
