Ever since the development of photography as a tool to 'faithfully' capture 'reality,' images have been used extensively in social analysis. With the development of image manipulation software at the turn of the 21st century and the development of Artificial Intelligence tools like Text-to-Image conversion, the dependability of images as reliable snapshots of reality is being increasingly questioned. Tracing the evolution of using images as research tools in academic knowledge generation, this workshop evaluates the challenges researchers face in using images in meaning-making processes. The workshop also explores both traditional image manipulation and Text-to-Image AI generation tools.
