Fireside Chat: Former South Korean Astronaut Yi So-yeon

    Join the College of Engineering for a Fireside Chat with Major General Brian C. Lein, who will lead a discussion with bioengineer and former South Korean Astronaut Yi So-yeon.
     
    Hear about her incredible journey from PhD student to her 11 days in space and ballistic re-entry, and what she is doing now.

    Yi So-yeon
     
    Yi So-yeon is a bioengineer who started as South Korea’s first, and only, astronaut. While pursuing her PhD, Yi applied to the Korean Astronaut Program and was selected out of 36,000 candidates. She trained in Russian as a researcher and backup crewmember before being named a primary crewmember, going on to spend 12 days in space aboard the Soyuz TMA-12.
     
    Her return to Earth was marked by a ballistic re-entry when the craft landed 260 miles off course before being discovered by shepherds in Kazakhstan. She currently teaches physics at the University of Washington Tacoma
     
    Major General Brian C. Lein
     
    MG Brian C. Lein is a graduate of the United States Military Academy and is currently the Commanding General of the U.S. Army Medical Department Center and School. MG Lein has served as the Commander of Landstuhl Regional Medical Center and Evans Army Community Hospital, as the Commanding General of US Army Medical Research and Materiel Command and Fort Detrick, and many more. He is a 1988 graduate of the Temple University School of
    Medicine as an Alpha Omega Alpha Scholar.
     
    The event is being held with support from Society of Asian Scientists & Engineers, Temple; and Ascend Greater Philadelphia.
