The Music Studies department is pleased to welcome Dr. Sumanth Gopinath to give the inaugural talk of the Fall 2022 Music Studies Colloquium Series. Dr. Gopinath’s talk is titled “Steve Reich and the Child: Revisiting Phase Patterns (1970)" 

Sumanth Gopinath is Associate Professor of Music Theory at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities. He is the author of The Ringtone Dialectic: Economy and Cultural Form (2013), and he coedited The Oxford Handbook of Mobile Music Studies, vols. 1 and 2 (2014) with Jason Stanyek and Rethinking Reich (2019) with Pwyll ap Siôn. His publications on Steve Reich, musical minimalism, sound and digital media, Marxism and music studies, folk and country music, 20th/21st-c. US/UK concert music, and race/identity appear in a variety of journals and edited volumes. He is the leader of the independent Americana band The Gated Community.
