Ruiz has worked as a journalist and correspondent in northern Paraguay, on the border with Brazil, since 1995. He writes for Paraguay's largest newspaper, ABC Color. He will speak about his investigative reporting, and about drug trafficking and organized crime on one of the most dangerous borders in Latin America.
In 2012, he was awarded the International Press Freedom Award from the Committee to Protect Journalists. In 2017, he was hosted as Guest of Honor of the city of Buenos Aires. He has been attacked twice in his home and twice in his car by drug traffickers who were worried about the impact of his reporting. He has been living under armed guard, 24 hours a day for 24 years, and had to learn to handle weapons so he can protect himself.
He has lectured on this work in Brazil, Argentina, Peru, Colombia and Senegal.
