Race and Identity Artist Series: Alex Smith

Tyler School of Art and Architecture

Join science-fiction writer, activist, and cultural critic Alex Smith for an online discussion of his work in the context of Tyler's Race, Identity and Experience in American Art course.

A member of the sci-fi artist/activist collective Metropolarity, founder of the queer sci-fi reading series Laser Life, and curator of the retro-futurist electro mash-up art-jam Chrome City, Alex’s stories and writings embolden the weird, strange, and revolutionary dichotomy of being Black and queer in a world that marginalizes both.

Smith’s sci-fi work includes The Resistance web-series and Black Vans comic book, musical projects like the art-punk bands Solarized and Rainbow Crimes, and essays and articles for Pitchfork, The Key, Bandcamp, and Philly Gay News. He is a recipient of the Pew Fellowship in the Arts and soon to be published author of the sci-fi/cyberpunk/super-hero/Afrofuturist short story collection ARKDUST, forthcoming from Rosarium Publishing.

This program is open to the entire Temple community. It is part of the Race and Identity Artist Series, organized by the Gen Ed Race & Diversity faculty members Kara M'shinda and Ricky Yanas.

This event is made possible by the General Activities Fund (GAF)
