SPONSORED BY THE DEPARTMENT OF SOCIAL AND BEHAVIORAL SCIENCES
The purpose of this event is to explore the differences in the criminal justice, public health, and societal responses to the crack epidemic of the 1980s-90s, which disproportionately impacted Black and Latinx, inner city communities, and resulted in the devastating failure of the War on Drugs; in contrast to the current public health response to the opioid crisis, which has predominantly impacted suburban white communities. Scholars in criminal justice and public health will discuss the social, political, historical context of these approaches, and their impact on community health. Participants will be encouraged to envision an equitable, healing approach to resolving drug-related health concerns and historical trauma.
