The Annual Steuben and Vivian Granger Lecture in American Art
On October 9th the art history department is organizing the annual Steuben and Vivian Granger Lecture in American Art. This year we are honored to welcome Dr. E. Carmen Ramos, who is Curator of Latino Art and Deputy Director of the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, DC. Dr. Ramos will be speaking on the work of contemporary artist Freddy Rodríguez, whose colorful paintings fuse hard edge minimalist abstraction with aspects of his personal background as a Dominican American. She will also be discussing her professional mission as curator to develop a strong Latinx art program at the Smithsonian—sharing its goals, its importance and need on the national stage. Her work with Rodríguez, who spent time in residence at the museum, exemplifies the kind of shift she has been working to achieve by bringing prominence to what she calls the Latinx presence in American Art.
