Stories of Sustainability: Understanding the Ocean's Role in Climate Change

    Office of Sustainability

For this year's Campus Sustainability Month, we'll be hearing from our own Earth and Environmental Science faculty member and Dr. Rebecca Beadling, climate scientist and oceanographer who uses observations and climate model simulations to understand the ocean's role in the climate system. Her research particularly focuses on ocean circulation and processes within the Southern Ocean, their projected changes under continued warming, and the role these remote processes play in the global climate.

As atmospheric greenhouse gas concentrations continue to rise, the consequences for humanity will be determined by how the physical climate system responds to the excess energy trapped on our planet. Over the past several decades, parallel advances in observing systems and the development of sophisticated climate models have revealed the key role that our oceans play in setting past, present, and future climate states. Developing appropriate climate adaptation and mitigation strategies lies in building a deep understanding of the current state of our oceans, how ocean circulation responds to changes within the climate system, and how ocean physics and biogeochemistry will evolve throughout the 21st century and beyond. Throughout this interactive talk I will discuss the role of the ocean in a changing climate and how we can use both climate models and observations to improve our understanding and reduce our uncertainty in projected climate change.
