Striving towards Health Equity: Opportunities for Social Workers to Address Health Disparities
Instructor: Celeste Vaughan Briggs, LCSW
Engaging the health care system in the United States is often a challenging task for patients and their families. Differences in health literacy of patients can be an issue for providers needing to translate tests and procedures into understandable and action-based steps. Further, the nation's health care system is in a period of rapid change and great innovation, which exist alongside large differences in access and outcomes. Using the social determinants of health framework, we will discuss contributing factors of these health disparities and how ultimately all patients are impacted. Social workers have a rich history of providing services in a variety of health care settings, participating in multidisciplinary teams and advocating for change. This course will give a broad overview of health disparities in the United States and interventions and strategies that social workers can implement to address these in the field.
