In this workshop, we'll take a look at the future of virtual reality (VR) in health sciences after a brief introduction to the technology. Some experts suggest VR is in a sort of plateau state, having settled in this field as an anatomy study alternative, radiology viewing tool, stress reduction system and clinical scenario facilitator. VR, however, is in the hands of more people/patients than ever thanks to newer consumer-focused headsets, which opens up new avenues for the technology like immersive telemedicine, at-home physical therapy, remote communal study, and more. While the next true advancement in VR is unclear, we will review several scenarios, discuss roadblocks that the technology experiences, and explore upcoming programs and peripherals of interest.
