The Social Determinants of Maternal Child Health

This course will provide attendees with a general understanding of social determinants of health and their intersection with pregnancy and birth outcomes. The United States has seen a concerning rise in maternal deaths and complications. Philadelphia has one of the highest maternal mortality and morbidity rates in the country. The course will present an overview of social determinants of health such as access to health care, education, income, physical environment, and social status. We will discuss how issues related to social determinants of health impact pregnancy, birth outcomes, and early infancy. Participants will learn about racial disparities in maternal health. The course will identify resources that exist to support pregnant women and families with young children.
