Tyler Critical Dialogues: Chitra Ganesh The Scale of Myth

Tyler School of Art and Architecture
    Chitra Ganesh, Fingerprints, 2007

Chitra Ganesh's drawing-based practice brings to light narrative representations of femininity, sexuality, and power typically absent from canons of literature, history and art. Her wall installations, comics, photography, and mixed media works on paper often take historical and mythic texts as inspiration and points of departure. Ganesh graduated magna cum laude from Brown University in with a BA in Comparative Literature and Art- Semiotics, and received her MFA from Columbia University in 2002.For over a decade, Ganesh’s work has been widely exhibited both locally and internationally. Notable international exhibitions include the Asia Society (2005) in New York, Fondazione Sandretto (2006), Kunsthalle Exnergrasse (2011) and Queens Museum (2013), with solo presentations at PS1/MOMA (2009-10), The Andy Warhol Museum (2011), Gothenberg Kunsthalle (2012) and the Brooklyn Museum (2014). Her works are held in the permanent collections of Philadelphia Museum of Art, San Jose Museum of Art, Baltimore Museum, the Whitney Museum, and Museum of Modern Art. Ganesh has received numerous grants including a John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship in the Creative Arts (2012), and awards from the Art Matters Foundation (2010), Joan Mitchell Foundation (2010), New York Foundation for the Arts (2009), and New York Community Trust (2006), among others. She currently holds a Hodder Fellowship at Princeton University’s Lewis Center for the Arts. www.chitraganesh.com
