The concept of professionalism is looked at most commonly in two main ways, either as a set of attributes or as a philosophy or approach. While the term may be interpreted differently by individuals, the "rules" surrounding professionalism have historically favored white, cisgender males. Within healthcare, both patients and colleagues may hold biases against individuals for appearance-based reasons. To truly become culturally inclusive, the concept of appearance-based professionalism must be examined.
