The Power of Stories

    College of Liberal Arts

How can stories bring forth healing?  Make sense out of chaos?  Make us laugh, cry, feel, think.

Learn more about what Narrative Medicine is – are you pre-med?  Do you want to take courses that help you build empathy?  Listen to patients with empathy and compassion?

The humanities include the Arts and Sciences and Narrative Medicine provides a bridge between them.

“My mission is to focus on the human side of medicine, to bring a sense of wonder to life inside the hospital, to tell stories myself and also to share my passion for storytelling with the medical students. Storytelling is an indispensable part of medicine, too often overlooked. I hope to get doctors, nurses, students and patients writing and reflecting and appreciating the importance of stories in medicine. Narrative Medicine is an emerging field. A central premise is that doctors can’t provide the best care, and won’t feel the most fulfillment, unless they know their patients' stories.”  -- Michael Vitez
