Please join us for the 2014 Challenging War Conference, withe keynote speakers Dr. James Pattison (University of Manchester) and Dr. Yvonne Chiu (U.S. Naval War College).
Dr. James Pattison will be speaking on Russia's war against Ukraine. Dr. Pattison will set out the case against assisting Ukraine military due to the oppportunity costs, and present th egeneral implications for the extent to which states should prioritize military aid over the means of addressing global challenges. Dr. Pattisons' work focuses on ethical issues in international politics. He has particular research expertise on humanitarian intervention and the responsibility to protect (R2P), Just War Theory, private security, and the alternatives to war.
Dr. Yvonne Chiu will be presenting the "Ethics of War Termination", in which she will discuss the current Russia-Ukraine and Hamas-Israel wars. Dr. Chiu writes on just war theory, international ethics, comparative political thought and authoritarianism. Her book Conspiring with the Enemy: The Ethic of Cooperation in Warfare won the International Studies Association – International Ethics Section Book Award 2021 and the North American Society for Social Philosophy Book Award 2019.
